Collection: Jungmin Park
Jungmin Park (b. 1983 in South Korea) lives and works in Munich. After studying fine arts in Seoul, she continued her education at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, studying with Jean-Marc Bustamante and Florian Pumhösl, among others, and graduated as a master student in 2017. For two decades, her artistic practice has revolved around the perception of water – not as a natural motif, but as a medium of transformation and seeing.
Her current body of work focuses on raindrops on glass surfaces. The artist draws attention to everyday situations that undergo a subtle shift through water, light, and movement. Windows become membranes between inside and outside, between immediate experience and memory. Through refractions, reflections, and superimpositions, familiar scenes dissolve and, at the same time, condense into atmospheric pictorial spaces. Figuration and abstraction remain in an open tension, in which what is seen is never fully fixed.
Park's painting explores perception as a dynamic process. Behind the sharply observed drops, streets, landscapes, or architectural fragments appear merely as suggestions that only unfold in the act of viewing. The works open up spaces between reality, imagination, and memory, directing attention to those fleeting moments in which the world changes without losing its essence. With great painterly precision, Jungmin Park creates images of quiet intensity that make seeing itself the subject.

Q&A with the artists:
The exhibition ARTIFICIAL? Traces of the Present brings together works that question our perception. Reality appears not as a given, but as something that is constantly being appropriated. ARTIFICIAL? questions whether what we see and experience is not always already made, constructed, and mediated.
