Collection: Werner Maier
Werner Maier (born 1956 in Munich) is one of those artists who understand drawing and painting as a continuous form of perception. After studying painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Horst Sauerbruch, Fridhelm Klein, and Rudi Tröger, he developed an independent artistic position characterized for decades by an intensive engagement with landscape, figure, and atmosphere. Since 1987, he has worked as a freelance artist, presenting his works in national and international exhibitions.
At the core of his work is the direct experience of seeing. With great sensitivity to light, color, and spatial relationships, Maier approaches his subjects and translates observations into a concentrated painterly language. Landscapes, interiors, and figures appear not as mere depictions of reality but as condensations of perception and memory. His works preserve the traces of their creation process and open up a space where objective presence and painterly openness interact.
In addition to his artistic work, Maier has been involved in teaching for many years. Teaching assignments at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and his continuous work at various summer academies testify to his enduring interest in teaching drawing and painting. Works by the artist have been acquired by museums and public collections, including the Albertina Vienna, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München, the Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden, the Burda Collection, and Munich Re. The combination of craftsmanship, artistic experience, and concentrated perception gives his work timeless endurance.

Q&A with the artists:
The exhibition ARTIFICIAL? Traces of the Present brings together works that question our perception. Reality appears not as a given, but as something that is constantly being appropriated. ARTIFICIAL? questions whether what we see and experience is not always already made, constructed, and mediated.
